Weiss Ratings, Inc. Assigns an A- (Excellent) Rating
to Scott & White Health Plan

Florida-based Weiss Ratings, Inc. has assigned the Scott & White Health Plan (SWHP) a financial safety rating of A- (Excellent), the highest rating the firm has ever given to SWHP. One of the country's leading consumer advocates concerned with financial security, Weiss Ratings provides data and analysis for consumers, professionals, institutions and federal agencies, and is used by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

"We are honored to receive this A- (Excellent) rating," said Allan Einboden, executive director of SWHP. "This reflects favorably on our conservative management philosophy, which has helped us to grow and meet the needs of our members throughout Texas."

What does an A- (Excellent) rating from Weiss mean? The independent rating agency, which has been rating insurance companies since 1989, says its ratings are based on reviews and analyses of information gathered from state insurance commissions and other official sources. "The A- rating means that, in our opinion, this company offers excellent financial security," states a Weiss Ratings consumer safety update from July 2004. "It (SWHP) has maintained a conservative stance in its investment strategies, business operations and underwriting commitments. While the financial position of any company is subject to change, we believe that this company has the resources necessary to deal with severe economic conditions."

In its analysis, Weiss Ratings uses indexes to profile different aspects of a company's performance. The areas are capitalization, investment safety, profitability, liquidity and stability. Weiss rated SWHP as 'excellent' in each area in this recent update.

The report stated that by receiving the A- rating SWHP is now included on the Weiss Recommended List of companies, an elite group that represents the top 17.1 percent of the industry.
