S&W Healthcare responds to Supreme Court Ruling

June 29, 2012

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) will extend coverage to an additional 4.1 million Texans. Our experience tells us that access to timely, affordable health care-especially primary care-can lead to better outcomes at lower costs, will provide patients a better quality of life and can close gaps in health disparities.

Scott & White Healthcare has not waited for this Supreme Court ruling to improve quality, access and cost of health care. We have adapted and led in health care innovations for more than a century to provide personalized, comprehensive, high quality health care, while also educating the next generation of healers and engaging in discovery.

Experience with our Scott & White Health Plan over the last 30 years also has taught us that premiums are more affordable when the healthy are part of the insurance pool. The PPACA individual requirement to purchase health insurance is a way to ensure the healthy are part of the insurance pool leading to premium affordability.

Among the issues that we believe still need to be addressed: long-term costs of Medicare and Medicaid programs and improving access to primary and preventive care.

Scott & White has been a trusted partner in providing health care to our community the past 115 years, and we will be here for our patients no matter how the payment system changes. The Supreme Court ruling upholding PPACA is yet another milestone in the health care evolution which Scott & White is helping to lead.
