Save Money with Maintenance Medication Benefit

medicationsSave Money with Maintenance Medication Benefit

What is a maintenance medication?

Maintenance medications are also known as long-term medications.  These medications are most commonly used to treat chronic or long-term disease states.  Maintenance medications normally require less dosage or therapy changes due to a low incidence of side effects and less monitoring requirements over the course of extended therapy.  Therefore, maintenance medications are more cost effective to dispense in quantities greater than the standard 30 day supply.

How do I know if my medication can be dispensed as a maintenance medication?

Scott & White Health Plan uses a listing of preferred drugs called a formulary.  Not all generic or brand medications listed on the formulary are eligible for the maintenance benefit of receiving up to a 90-day supply.  To find out if your medication is eligible for a maintenance benefit, visit our formulary page. (Some groups have their own formulary which may be slightly different. Check with your benefits administator if you think you may have a different formulary.) Only those medications indicated as maintenance eligible on the formulary will process for up to a 90-day supply for the applicable maintenance copayment.

How do maintenance medications save me money?

Members may save up to one-third of their total pharmacy costs on maintenance medications. For example, many members may be eligible to receive a three-month supply of their maintenance medications at one time and pay just a two-month co-pay amount. For specific benefit information, please refer to your Evidence of Coverage or Summary of Benefits.

Where can I get my prescription filled at maintenance quanties?

Maintenance eligible medications can only be obtained from a Scott & White Pharmacy or through our mail-order at the Scott & White Pharmacy-Salado.  For a listing of Scott & White Pharmacies, visit our Pharmacies page.   Take advantage of your maintenance medication benefit by contacting one of our Scott & White Pharmacies or visit our online request page.

Scott & White Health Plan continues to strive to make your prescription benefit more affordable.  For more information on this topic or any other, you may contact our Customer Advocacy team at 1-800-321-7947.
